As Cruel Diagonals, Megan Mitchell composes unsettling, ethereal music, drawing on her history as a jazz and classically trained vocalist. Influenced by early experimental filmmakers such as Maya Deren and Kenneth Anger, her work has been described in cinematic terms, evoking moods and montages of an eerie, surrealist timbre. Mitchell performs and creates in numerous capacities, releasing critically acclaimed albums with Drawing Room Records and Longform Editions and acting as proprietor of the left-of-field music index for non-male composers, Many Many Women. She is also an avid researcher, holding a Master in Library and Information Sciences from the University of Washington specializing in audio archiving and visiting and documenting places of abandoned industry with her field recorder and camera in tow. Cruel Diagonals is an outlet for destructive sample processing, vocal exploration, and a palette for inter-media contemplations and applications. Warped field recordings and layered vocals incite a beckoning to a phantasmagorical, metallic-tinged state of existence.
